Meet Queer Clothes

Updated: Apr 21, 2021

Navigating the fashion world can be difficult.

We know the fashion industry is fatphobic. It can feel impossible to find cute clothes outside of standard sizing.

If you like really funky clothes from specific decades or in specific styles like clowncore, punk, kawaii, cottagecore, goth, or other alternative fashion subgenres, it can be even harder to find options.

When these options are offered, it's often at a high cost or premium for extended sizes.

The few affordable options like SheIn Plus or Amazon make some trendier pieces, but what about the human and environmental costs from supporting these giants?

If you care about ethical company practices, the effect of fast fashion on the environment, and the treatment of garment workers, these options become untenable too.

So what can you do to find cool, size-inclusive options with a clear conscience?

Enter Queer Clothes!

As a midsize woman who cares about the environment and expressing myself through clothes (but only has a college student's budget) I'm here to provide the resources and tricks I've found.

In this blog, we'll cover:

  • Strategies to find clothes at mainstream thrift shops

  • Methods to DIY/ upcycle basics and tailor them suit your style

  • Which small/ independent businesses have affordable and size-inclusive options

We'll also visit topics and issues in the secondhand community.

So many industries rely on consumers feeling pressured to keep up with current trends and bad about their bodies. It keeps us spending money. Let's work together to subvert their expectations: find secondhand and ethically produced clothes for our current bodies in whichever style we find fun! Fatshion is for all. Push normal out of the closet.
